Peewee Head Coach: Kevin Morgan
No one is better equipped to develop and challenge the East Coast Eagles Peewee team than Kevin Morgan. With 29 years of coaching experience, this coach has played a role in the development of many players over the years that have gone on to play prep school, Junior, college and professional hockey including Ken Klee, a one time player for Morgan and now an NHL defenseman for the Atlanta Thrashers.
Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Morgan played youth/amateur hockey in Toronto and the southern Ontario area for a variety of programs. His college career landed him at Division II Brockport State. He wrapped up his competitive professional playing career in 1975 with the Kansas City Knights.Morgan's many coaching highlights include a USA Hockey Tier II National Championship appearance, a USA Hockey Central District Championship, four USA Hockey Regional Qualifying Tournament Championships and a variety of AAA and AA International Tournament Championships. In 1983, Morgan's team was the only team to defeat Team Finland (Turku AAA) during its North American Tour. He has a Minnesota Silver Stick Championship to his credit and five consecutive MAHL Championships. Last season he led our Squirts to a AAA Championship and a AA Silver Stick Regional Championship while compiling a 41-8-8 season record.
"Success is oftentimes measured in wins and losses, but I don't believe this is the key element in measuring success," says Morgan, whose coaching philosophy includes sportsmanship first, adopting the team concept, working hard, having fun and striving to reach potential. "The improvement that a team realizes over the course of a season is a much more rewarding measurement of success than any statistic."
Morgan has certainly experienced the "highs" of a winning coaching career. We're confident that he will continue to instill in our very own East Coast Eagles that same "can do" attitude and the same drive for success that has fostered champions on and off the ice for the past 29 years.
Coaches Dave Trevor and Nick Sabo will be assisting Coach Morgan this season. Coach Trevor returns for his 5th season with the Eagles and will focus on offense. Coach Sabo joins the Eagles this season and will focus on defense.
Trevor and Sabo Strengthen Eagles Peewee Coaching Staff
The East Coast Eagles are excited to announce the return of Dave Trevor and the addition of Nick Sabo as Assistant Coaches for the ECE Peewee Team. He has over 15 years of coaching experience at Tier I and II Squirt/Peewee and Bantam levels. Trevor was instrumental in developing last year's Peewee defense and special teams. With his total commitment to drills and execution, Trevor's power play and penalty kill units proved to be key during the 2008 Sobiech Championship victory, in which his units killed 10 penalties (two 5 on 3 penalties) and won t he overtime Championship Game on a well executed power play goal. This year, Trevor will focus on centers and wings along with special teams.
Nick Sabo, a native of Peoria, IL, is a Level III Coach. He played Junior Hockey with the Central Penn Panthers and was selected as captain of the Metro Junior Hockey League All Star Team as a defenseman. Sabo went on to play hockey at at North Carolina State University, where he was the team captain. More recently, he has developed youth hockey players as a 3 year Head Instructor with the Carolina Hurricanes Youth Hockey Camp. He has been actively involved as an ECE youth evaluator and as a Bantam/Midget hockey official. Sabo will be coaching and developing the ECE defensemen and assisting on special teams. Head Coach Kevin Morgan, Dave Trevor and Nick Sabo have demonstrated a strong off-season commitment to the development of all Peewee Hockey players in the area by volunteering their time to run the Summer Peewee Open Ice Scrimmages on Wednesday nights at the Cary Ice House.
Head Coach Kevin Morgan looks to continue the success attained last season as he builds the 2008-09 ECE Peewee Team. "We had a great season last year with a very young team", says Morgan, "winning Sobiech and earning our way to the Southeast District Semi-finals was the culmination of hard work, confidence and determination". Our goal this year is to not only repeat as Sobiech champions and advance to the District tournament, but to win that and make an appearance at the National tournament. "We've got a strong core of players eligible to return this season and I'm especially excited about the new players who are looking to join the team", said Morgan, "The fact is, I'm not a parent coach and neither are any of my assistants; as far as we're concerned the team is wide open on both offense and defense. Like last year, we'll pick and we'll play the kids who demonstrate the skill, work ethic, positive attitude and potential to improve during the season, nothing else."
Head Coach Kevin Morgan has over 30 years of coaching experience, developing nationally competitive championship teams. To see his complete profile go to the coaches page.
